Hey all! Returning from some time away from the Engine, and I thought I’d pop in, and see how things are.
One of the things I really hate in life is using Visual Studio, it’s so incredibly slow, and the interface is distressingly ugly these days. Free quilt design software for mac. VS Code is fast, not ugly, and other than lacking a lot in configurability for layout, it’s really not a bad editor at all.
So, of course, I was excited to see that VS Code is supported. However, it seems that that support pretty much only extends to “it can launch the project and a file into a new window”.
I’ve done some poking around at how to configure the c_cpp_properties.json to include the include files, and have added several paths, just to get one single file to intellisense kind of close to correctly. Once it stops complaining about include files, it starts complaining about tons of “is not a type name”, “expected an identifier”, “is undefined”, etc. My guess is that it probably needs a lot more include paths added to it, so that it can read it all… but… what needs to be added? Also, once IntelliSense is actually intelligent-ish, how can you configure it to build?
Inside the editor, you want to open the Editor Preferences tab. Then, under the Source Code section, set the Source Code Editor option to Visual Studio Code. If Visual Studio Code isn't in this list, you may need to either install it first (I don't remember if that matters or not), or you may have to upgrade to 4.18. Afterward, browse to your project folder, right click YourProject.uproject, and click 'Generate Visual Studio. Developer community 2. Search Search Microsoft.com.

So, I thought I’d post here – have you configured VS Code for use with Unreal? What did you do? How?
The prerequisites for the source code version of the engine are Visual Studio 2019 (or higher) on Windows or Xcode on macOS. Chances are, even if you use Unreal, you will still use Visual Studio or something similar to write the code. Unreal Engine uses C, and you can use VS to write your game code to be used on Unreal. I honestly would not start from scratch unless you want the experience and feel the pain of developing your own engine.

Adding Code to Projects
C++ Class Wizard
The C++ Class Wizard provides a fast and easy way to add native C++ code classes into your project for you to extend with your own functionality, if you wish. This converts a content-only project into a code project. You can access the C++ Class Wizard like so:
Please make sure you are running Visual Studio 2015 or higher for Windows Desktop installed before proceeding. If you are using Mac, make sure to have Xcode 8 or higher installed.
In the main editor, select File > New C++ Class..
The C++ Class Wizard will appear, showing commonly added classes. If you do not see the class you are looking for, then you will need to view the entire Class hierarchy listing. Click the Show All Classes checkbox in the upper-right corner of the window.
Choose the Class you wish to add and click the Next > button.
You will then be prompted to enter a Name for your new Class. Do so and click the Create Class button. This will create the header (.h) and source (.cpp) files.
Class names may only contain alphanumeric characters and cannot contain spaces. The field will notify you if you enter an invalid name.
