'Over the Rainbow' is one of the most memorable of themes from agroundbreaking film and recording artist, written by Harold Arlen (music) and E Y Harburg (lyrics) it is a great song tohave in your repertoire. This is a very 'playable' arrangement suitable for beginning players. If you have a grasp of basic open position chords and you are willing to have a go at some basic finger style techniques and approaches you should with a little effort and care get a nice feel for this solo arrangement. A Word on Technique

If you are able to play a few, and I mean even if it is only a few, basic 'open' position chord shapes, then you should be able to cope with this arrangement. The worst case scenario would be that you need some time to build up to it with a little practice. In any case as always nothing is etched in stone. You may decide, perhaps by way of a 'mistake' that you discover your own twists or mutations to this little arrangement that you like the sound of. Great!!

Make Use of the Fingerings

It is likely at this stage (if you are considering yourself a beginner) that standard notation is not familiar to you. You can however use the fretting hand fingering annotations to help you even if you are using the Tablature to work out the arrangement. Have a look at this screen shot below of the very first two bars of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Look closely here at the first event. You have a G major chord. It is represented in tablature form by the numbers 3,2,0,0 that are stacked on top of each other. Above this you see the standard notational stave representation. This has note 'heads' stacked on top of each other in a corresponding way.

Can you see the little 1 and 2 just above the little dynamic marking mf ?

These are fretting hand fingerings. These are your left hand fingers if you are a right hand player. If in doubt check out the Fretboard Orientation video here.

Just to the left and slightly below each corresponding note head to the tab below is a fingering number. They will come and go as an aid to help guide you along. Try to keep an open mind and get used to trying to consider your own possibilities for both fretting and picking hand fingerings.

Remember if you can count to 12, hold a pencil with your thumb and finger tips, say the alphabet from A through to G then .... You can learn to play guitar!

Today we’ll be learning Israel Kamakawiwoʻole’s (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kəˌmɐkəˌvivoˈʔole]) version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, which was originally written for the 1939 move the Wizard of Oz, and was sung by Judy Garland.

The original was nice, but nothing beats Brudha IZ’s version, which we’ll be learning today. I truly think that this song, as performed by IZ, is one of the most enjoyable songs in the world. It has that feel good, mellow vibe that’s hard to come by these days. No matter how many times I’ve listened to it across the years, I was always able to just relax and enjoy the moment with this song. It brings me great pleasure to teach this song to you, as I hope it will have the same effect on you as well.

IZ plays this song on the ukulele, but we’ll of course be playing it on the guitar. To be able to play it in the same key, we’ll need to place a capo onto the 5th fret. This is how I teach the song, but if you don’t have a capo handy right now, you can learn it without it as well. In this case, you should really get a capo though 🙂

We’ll first of all learn the chords to Somewhere Over The Rainbow. They are pretty easy beginner chord shapes in the key of G which you’ll be used to, but for theories sake, know that because of the capo on the 5th fret, you’ll actually be playing in the key of C (5 semitones up from G).

Once you are comfortable with the chords, it’s time to learn the strumming pattern. The strumming will seem a bit awkward at first, so it’s best to practice it on a single chord, or muted strings at first. Notice the swing rhythm, and the different sound effect you create by strumming the strings so many different ways:

  • your thumb
  • your index finger nail
  • your index finger flesh

It’s the combination of these different sounds that give the strumming pattern a ukulele like vibe.

We’ll be learning all of the parts to the song, starting with the intro, the humming part, the main part, and the chorus as well. Each part is pretty similar, so learn your chords well, they’ll take you far.

The song was originally released in 1993, but it wasn’t till several years later, that it started gaining traction, after having been used in a TV commercial.

To this day, if it is used in a popular commercial or TV show, it starts being played on radio as well. For example, in 2010, when it was used in an Axe deodorant commercial in Germany, it reached the top of the German singles chart.
